Mary Yang is a classically-trained musician and composer currently based in Los Angeles.
Born in San Francisco and raised in Beijing and Houston, she trained primarily as a violinist from an early age under the tutelage of her father, Bingsun Yang, concert violinist and formerly the concertmaster of the Central Philharmonic Orchestra of China.
An avid orchestral player since youth, she continued her music studies at Northwestern University, where she was a member of the Northwestern University Philharmonia, performed with various chamber and orchestral groups, and completed a concentration in music while majoring in economics and math methods in the social sciences.
While working in economic research in Washington, DC and obtaining a master’s degree in economics and public policy from Princeton University, she continued her music pursuits, serving as the associate concertmaster of the American University Symphony Orchestra, performing with the World Bank-IMF Chorus as a violinist and soprano, as well as teaching.

She continued her music studies at New York University in the master's program in music composition concentrating in film scoring, under the instruction of Michael Patterson and Jerica Oblak. In addition to composing for film, she also has experience in musical theater songwriting, music editing, and sound design.
